To address an ever increasing need for trained early childhood teachers, Gwinnett Technical College began offering an Early Childhood Care and Education Associate of Applied Technology degree in 2003. Over the past three years as our enrollment has grown and the importance of early childhood education and the need for well trained teachers has come to the forefront, Gwinnett Technical College has taken a leadership role.
The D. Scott Hudgens Early Education Center was established to:
- be used as a lab site for giving our students hands on experiences in a quality center
- be a center for other to use as a model in the community
- to provide a safe quality learning environment for our youngest citizens
- to provide a research site for understanding children
Teaching young children is an art and a science. The science of teaching young children is provided through the extensive theory students learn through the Gwinnett Tech Early Childhood Care and Education program. The mission of the D. Scott Hudgens, Jr. Early Education Center is to provide an enriching environment in which adults can develop the art of teaching to become exemplary teachers of young children while providing the children in our program an environment that stimulates each child to develop to their fullest potential in all areas – cognitively, socially, emotionally and physically.
Everything we do at the D. Scott Hudgens, Jr. Early Education Center is based on our philosophy that children construct and order their knowledge and learning through interactions with caring people and by acting on and in a prepared environment.
Each day we provide children with opportunities to enhance their intellectual and problem-solving abilities; strengthen their emotional health; develop socially in their ability to relate with other children and adults; and express themselves creatively. Our facility is designed to provide opportunities in a warm and secure environment that fosters the development of the whole child. Every aspect of our program from mealtime, to guidance, to learning activities is designed to contribute to the children’s learning and development. We believe that developing a positive self-concept fosters success in life and this is enhanced when each child is cared for in a nurturing environment that meets his or her physical, social, emotional and intellectual needs.
The Hudgens Early Education Center is a place where a child can learn while they play and share experiences with other children. The environment is designed to enable the child to develop close relationships with members in his primary room while providing opportunities to expand his social skills as he interacts with members from a secondary group in the sensory or “messy” room and an even larger group as he works on projects in the piazza. This configuration reflects society’s social structures of family, neighborhood and community.
